Although The village is outside the limits of the protected area, a great part of its territory belongs to The Natural Park.

Its known that the place has been inhabited at least since the sixteenth century.

The district, as part of the Levant littoral of Almeria, is surrounded by an arid landscape of desert and volcanic formations belonging to The Natural Park.

This small rocky island, with the shape of a whale and an area of 1?5 hectares, is formed by a group of two islets ("the Isla Grande" and "the Isla Chica") situated in front of Carboneras, at a distance of four hundred metres from a beach called "La Puntica".
